The Fallen Lands of Westerness
They Skyscorn Mountains rise between the grim Charnelmounts and the great grasslands of the Bladesea. Capped with dark conifers, riddled with dank caves and steep slopes, the mountains have an air of danger and inaccessibility that has kept away many stouthearted miners. In ancient days, the first Dwarves to arrive in Westerness dug deeply into the rich mountains and carved out a mighty Dwarfhold, Tumun Gathol (the Hollow Mountain). The tales of their wealth and craftsmanship brought many of the early explorers from Akhosia and Bael-Turath to the shores of Westerness. While mighty were the Dwarves, eventually ruin befell their kingdom. With the loss of Tumun Gathol, few were willing to risk the dangers of the Skyscorns – what few mines were left were abandoned to cave-ins and monstrous invaders that found them to their liking.
Now from the misty vales of the Skyscorn Mountains flow rumors of rediscovered mines, wild tales of chasms glittering with the crimson spark of rubies, caves aglow with the star-light of diamonds. Intoxicating stories of wealth uncountable draw the greedy and the foolish into the wilds. Somewhere beneath those forbidding peaks lies the abandoned gates of Tumun Gathol. How far will greed drive these new prospectors to delve? How deeply will they dare, seeking unimaginable riches and risking whatever doom shattered the mightiest of Dwarfholds? Other, more sinister explorers venture into the the Skyscorns – rumor has it that bandits and brigands have been abducting would-be miners, though for what purpose one can only guess. Are these poor souls forced to work in the depths of a secret mine, or maybe sold into slavery to the gnoll tribes or perhaps traded to more sinister entities living under the moutains?
